About Laurel Lake, New Jersey
Laurel Lake is a community of 2,861 people in Commercial Township, in Cumberland County, New Jersey. Its lake started out as the millpond of a sawmill owned by Daniel England on Buckshutem Creek, and that mill was already standing early in the eighteenth century.
- On the road of 1705In 1705 a new road was laid out from Salem to the Maurice River. Its records mention England's sawmill on Buckshutem Creek, which places the mill and its pond here by that year.
- A Salem merchant's millThe mill later passed to William Hall, a merchant from Salem, who still owned it when he died in 1713. In later years people knew its pond as Buckshutem Pond and as Laurel Lake, and the community now carries the second of those names.
