About Leadville, Colorado

Leadville is a city of 2,633 people and the seat of Lake County, set at 10,119 feet among the headwaters of the Arkansas River. Prospectors found placer gold in California Gulch in 1859, and the camp of Oro City grew up along its stream. Miners there cursed a heavy black sand that clogged their sluice boxes, until in 1874 it proved to be cerussite, a lead mineral full of silver. By 1876 they had followed it uphill to rich silver-lead lodes, and Oro City was left a ghost town.

Mine owners Horace Tabor and August Meyer founded the new town in 1877. The tent camp was first called Slabtown, but when residents asked for a post office they picked the name Leadville. The county seat moved here in February 1879, and by 1880 more than 15,000 people lived in one of the world's richest silver camps, with gas lights, water mains, 28 miles of streets and a school for 1,100 students. The boom faded after Congress repealed the Sherman Silver Purchase Act in 1893.

“The outpouring of the precious metal from Leadville transformed the struggling Centennial State into a veritable autocrat in the colony of states.”

  • Tabor Opera House, 1879Horace Tabor, a Vermont native who became Leadville's first mayor, built a three-story opera house of stone, brick and iron, with every material hauled by wagon from Denver. It was the most expensive building in Colorado when it opened on November 20, 1879, and it joined the National Register in 1966. Tabor lost his fortune in the Panic of 1893 and died broke on April 10, 1899.
  • A marshal sent from DenverBy 1878 Leadville was known as one of the West's most lawless towns. Its first city marshal was run out within days, and the next was shot dead by one of his own deputies inside a month. Mayor Tabor sent to Denver for Mart Duggan, a gunfighter with a fearless reputation, who used rough methods to bring order by 1880. Duggan was shot and killed by an unknown attacker in 1888.
  • The salted claim that paid"Chicken Bill" Lovell tipped a wheelbarrow of silver-rich ore into an empty pit on his Chrysolite claim so he could sell it to Horace Tabor at a high price. The trick worked, but Tabor came out ahead: his miners dug a few feet deeper and struck a rich ore body.
  • Molybdenum at ClimaxWorld War II raised demand for molybdenum, which hardens steel, and the nearby Climax mine once produced 75 percent of the world's supply. By 1980 it was the largest underground mine on earth, and its taxes paid for Leadville's schools and libraries. The market fell in 1981 and many miners left town, but Climax reopened in 2008 and began producing again in 2010.
