About Highwood, Illinois

Highwood is a compact Lake County city on a ridge above Lake Michigan, neighboring Highland Park and Fort Sheridan. Its population was 5,074 in the 2020 census. Railroads, Fort Sheridan, and successive immigrant communities shaped its growth, while an older streetscape preserves many prewar homes and storefronts.

  • Prewar StreetscapeMuch of Highwood developed before the postwar suburban boom, leaving prewar homes and brick commercial buildings with apartments above.
