About Leisure Village West, New Jersey
Leisure Village West is a retirement community of 3,692 people in Manchester Township, Ocean County. It was built by Leisure Technology Corporation, a company that Robert J. Schmertz, a builder from New Jersey, founded around 1967 to put up homes for retirees. In July 1974 the work was not yet finished, but families had already moved into some of the new houses.
- A builder who bought the CelticsRobert J. Schmertz started his first company, Pine Acres, Inc., in about 1952 to build low-cost housing. After he formed Leisure Technology, retirement communities became its main line of work. By 1974 he claimed his firm had built or begun more of them than any other company in the nation. Schmertz also bought the Boston Celtics.
- One of three Leisure VillagesTwo other retirement communities in this corner of Ocean County carry nearly the same name, Leisure Village and Leisure Village East, and both lie close to Leisure Village West.
- Its own census place in 2010Through the 2000 census, the village was counted together with its neighbor as the Leisure Village West-Pine Lake Park census place. For the 2010 count the two were split, and Leisure Village West has been tallied on its own since then.
