About Lakehurst, New Jersey

Lakehurst is a borough of 2,636 people in Ocean County, set among lakes and pine woods that gave it its name. Its fame began with the Pine Tree Inn, which opened in 1898, and around the turn of the 20th century the place won notice well beyond New Jersey as a winter resort.

In 1911 the town's rope factory burned to the ground, and residents answered by forming a volunteer fire department. A decade later Lakehurst set out on its own: an act of the legislature dated April 7, 1921, made it a borough carved out of Manchester Township, tied to a referendum held on May 24, 1921.

  • Lake HoriconTopographical maps from 1912 already show the borough's lake, as do aerial photographs taken in 1931 and 1940. Streams still feed its cedar water today.
  • A town inside a townManchester Township wraps around Lakehurst on every side. New Jersey has 21 such pairs, known as doughnut towns, where a single municipality fully encloses another.
  • The Hindenburg, May 6, 1937On that day the zeppelin Hindenburg, finishing a flight from Frankfurt am Main in Germany, burst into flames at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station. The station carries the borough's name, but it stands in Manchester Township, outside the borough line.
  • The oldest living OlympianAbel Kiviat ran at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, taking silver in the 1,500 meters and gold in the 3,000 meter team race. He spent his last years in Lakehurst and died at his home here in 1991, aged 99, as the oldest Olympian still alive.
