About Crestwood Village, New Jersey

Crestwood Village is a census-designated place of 8,426 people in Manchester Township, Ocean County. It was built as a planned community for senior citizens. Its neighborhoods were owned cooperatively, and the residents ran their own government.

By the community's 10th anniversary, 6,000 residents lived in 4,000 homes and shared six clubhouses, all built without subsidies or handouts. On February 4, 1976, Representative Hughes of New Jersey praised the village on the floor of the House. He also announced that the House Select Committee on Aging would hold hearings in the village on February 12 to learn from it.

  • Beaches at Harry Wright LakeHarry Wright Lake gave Crestwood Village residents a recreation area with clean beaches and picnic grounds. In his 1976 remarks to the House, Representative Hughes called the lake a superb place to relax.
  • A communal farmRetirement in Crestwood Village did not mean giving up the garden. Hundreds of residents worked a shared farm, where they raised their own fruits and vegetables.
  • Whiting's railroad junctionWhiting grew up at a meeting of rail lines. Around 1880 it was a post village of about 250 people, where the main line of the New Jersey Southern Railroad crossed both its Pemberton branch and the Tuckerton Railroad. The 1882 gazetteer Industries of New Jersey said the village did a good local business and shipped a great deal of freight.
