About Leonardtown, Maryland

Leonardtown, a town of 4,563 people, is the seat of St. Mary's County. By 1654 the county court met at John Hammond's house in an area called Newtown, or Newtowne Hundred, and for the rest of that century it moved from home to home there. In 1708 Phillip Lynes, mayor of the colonial capital at St. Mary's City, set aside fifty acres at the head of Brittons Bay, split them into 100 lots and saved one for a courthouse that could cost no more than 12,000 pounds of tobacco.

The new town was first named Seymour Town for Governor John Seymour. In 1728 the General Assembly renamed it for Leonard Calvert, Maryland's first colonial governor. In the decades after, people from across the county came here to do their official business with the colony, and their farm goods left from its port.

  • British Marines in 1812When the War of 1812 came, British ships closed off the Chesapeake Bay, and 1,000 British Marines invaded Leonardtown. The blockade and the raids that came with it crippled the Tidewater economy, as the British plundered and destroyed one place after another.
  • Searched by the Union NavyBy 1860 Leonardtown had about 35 dwellings, two hotels, several stores and the county's newspaper. In the Civil War the town sided with the Confederacy in spirit, so a Union naval force occupied it and went through every house, looking for weapons and supplies meant to cross the Potomac to Virginia.
  • Steamboats and a floating theaterLeonardtown was a busy port and steamboat landing, and steamboats carried its goods and passengers around the Chesapeake Bay well into the 20th century. Once a year a floating theater tied up at the port to entertain the town. The Leonardtown Wharf waterfront park opened to the public in May 2008.
  • Oysters since 1967The United States National Oyster Festival has been held in Leonardtown every year since 1967, and its oyster shucking competition is part of every festival.
  • The county's only mayorNo other place in St. Mary's County is an incorporated municipality, so Leonardtown is the only one whose voters choose a mayor and a town council.
