About Wildewood, Maryland

Wildewood is a planned community of 7,821 people in east-central St. Mary's County. Leonardtown, the county seat, lies about 7 miles to the west, and Washington, D.C., is 58 miles to the northwest. Wildewood borders the community of California on its east side, and its homesites sit among large shade trees.

The neighborhood began in the 1970s as an idea of developer Edmund Weston Wettengel Jr., known to everyone as Eddie. He carried the plan through himself, laying out the community and building it, and local leaders came to see it as a turning point for how the county grew.

  • The father of WildewoodEddie Wettengel was raised on a Montgomery County farm. In 1974 he moved to St. Mary's County with his wife, Connie Walker, and their children, and there he designed and built Wildewood. A county commissioner later gave Wettengel the title father of Wildewood, calling it the first planned development in the county to succeed.
  • Counted on its own in 2020Wildewood was first listed as a census-designated place ahead of the 2020 census, so that count was the first to give the community its own population figure. The census found 7,821 people living here.
