About Drum Point, Maryland
Drum Point is a community of 2,553 people in southern Calvert County, on the spot where the Patuxent River flows into the Chesapeake Bay. In colonial times this point guarded the way into the Patuxent, so ships heading up the river had to stop here and pay what they owed the Crown. The estate behind that work was Rousby Hall, and during the Revolution its great house was lost to raiders from the water.
- The Crown's customs houseA one-story brick house on the Rousby Hall grounds, dating from the mid-1700s, began as a customs building. Ships coming into the Patuxent paused here to settle their taxes to the Crown. John Rousby II, the king's tax collector for the Patuxent district, is thought to have worked out of this building, gathering taxes from an area that reached as far north as Baltimore.
- Burned in the RevolutionRousby Hall was the fine home of Colonel William Fitzhugh, a patriot soldier and a friend of both George and Lawrence Washington. During the Revolution, enemy raiders sailed small armed vessels into the mouth of the Patuxent and set the house on fire, and it burned to the ground. The Maryland Gazette reported the loss, and J. Thomas Scharf retold it in his 1881 history.
- Counted on its own since 2010Before 2010 the Census Bureau grouped Drum Point with its neighbor as the Chesapeake Ranch Estates-Drum Point census area. Counted by itself, Drum Point had 2,731 people in 2010 and 2,553 in 2020.
