About Chesapeake Ranch Estates, Maryland

Chesapeake Ranch Estates is a community of 10,308 people in southern Calvert County, on the Chesapeake Bay near Lusby. In 1957 Harvey Blumenthal and his wife, Cherie, purchased 250 acres here, and that land became the start of the Chesapeake Ranch Club. In its early years the club was a vacation getaway for people from out of town, and its streets took Wild West names such as Tomahawk Trail and Stagecoach Trail.

In the 1970s the club changed for good. The Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant brought growth to the Lusby area, the Patuxent River Naval Air Station stood across the river, and the old vacation spot turned into a suburb for commuters. Today the community has more than 4,000 homes, and its homeowners' association, known locally as the Ranch Club, still governs it.

  • Saturday nights at the Bronco RanchBack when the club was mostly a place for summer visitors, teenagers came to dances at its Bronco Ranch. On a typical Saturday night, anywhere from 100 to 200 of them showed up.
  • Fossils in the Calvert CliffsPart of the Calvert Cliffs lies inside the community. The cliffs are built from sand and clay laid down in layers you can plainly see, and more than 600 species of fossils have been found along their length. Seahorse Beach gives an easy view of them, but the cliffs themselves are off limits because they can collapse.
  • Two beaches and Lake LariatMembers share two private beaches on the bay, Driftwood Beach and Seahorse Beach, along with a man-made lake called Lake Lariat, a small airfield, a duck pond and a campground. The lake has struggled with runoff, algae and mercury, and the state has warned against eating its fish since 2002. Freshwater clams were placed in it to help clean the water.
