About Levant, Maine
Levant is a town in Penobscot County, Maine. Major Moses Hodsden founded it in 1802 as Kenduskeag Plantation, and he put up a sawmill, a gristmill, a store, a blacksmith shop and three houses where the village of Kenduskeag stands today. No other framed buildings likely stood between Bangor and the Kennebec River at the time.
The plantation was made a town in 1813 and took the name Levant, after the lands along the eastern shore of the Mediterranean. Levant had grown to 1,841 people when, in 1852, the village of Kenduskeag split away. It joined a piece of Glenburn and became a separate town.
- A spirit visits in 1824Early in 1824, John Bovee Dods, Levant's Congregational minister, said a spirit had come to him, and strange poltergeist events followed in his house. Perhaps a hundred curious people came to see them. Dods turned Universalist in 1826 and moved to Union but kept preaching in Levant. He later wrote The Philosophy of Electrical Psychology in 1850, and after he converted to spiritualism in 1856 he became one of its leaders in New York City.
- Run out of town in 1899George W. Higgins, preaching for Frank Sandford's Disciples of the Holy Ghost, won about 15 Levant converts and urged them to give Sandford their property and move to Shiloh Temple in Durham. When one follower killed himself and Higgins told another to whip a small child, two selectmen ordered him out. He refused, so a mob tarred and feathered him and rode him on a rail to the town line. In the 1930s their neighborhood was still called Higginsville.
- A governor born hereBorn in Levant in 1854, William Thomas Haines went on to the University of Maine and Albany Law School, practiced law in Oakland and Waterville, and became Maine's attorney general. As governor from 1913 to 1915, he backed a bond issue to improve roads, along with laws on public utilities and trusts.
