About Liberty, Nebraska

Liberty is a village of 37 people in Gage County. White settlers were arriving in the area as early as 1855, and an early trading post stood in a log cabin on Plum Creek, about a mile west of the present town. There an Indian trader named Gideon Bennett sold beads and calico for furs and buffalo robes, and he let heads of families buy on credit against their coming annuity payments.

The business later passed to Macdonald of St. Joseph, who hired Mrs. David Palmer in 1859 to run the store because she spoke the Indian language. Her husband, David Palmer, is credited with founding the town, and Liberty grew further when railroad workers came to lay the tracks through it. Palmer later lost his life in the waters of a river close by, and he lies in the Liberty Cemetery. By 1890 the village he started had 469 people.

“An early post office in the vicinity was called Liberty and when the village was laid out its founders adopted the name of the post office as a suitable cognomen for the prospective town.”
Nebraska Place-Names, 1925
  • A busy town in 1890At its peak in 1890, Liberty's 469 residents kept a hotel, a livery, a lumber yard, a hardware store, a dry goods store, a meat market and three groceries, along with barbershops, an undertaker and a law office. The village even printed its own newspaper, The Liberty Journal. The money panic of 1893 ended that boom, as many farmers sold what they could and moved away, and the village never recovered.
  • A bank since 1882Frank Stewart and E. E. Harden organized Liberty's first bank in 1882. It changed names over the years, from Harden & Stewart's Bank to the Bank of Liberty and then the First National Bank of Liberty, but the county history of 1918 reports that it had stayed open without a break the whole time.
  • Reservation landMost of Liberty Township once lay inside a reservation that crossed Gage County as a strip eight miles wide, with 126,720 of its acres in the county. The 1918 county history describes that land as well watered and well timbered, with the Big Blue River running southeast through it.
