About Lime Ridge, Pennsylvania
Abram Miller, an innkeeper, was the first to open the limestone deposits here. Much of the lime went by canal to Wilkes-Barre for use in buildings. The quarries soon drew families, and from them grew the town of Centreville, also called Lime Ridge. Part of Miller's old kiln could still be seen in 1915.
Burning limestone for lime was once the leading industry of Columbia and Montour counties. By 1915, Lime Ridge was one of the few places where the plants were still in use. Two firms quarried stone here for ballast and burning, and they made a fine grade of hydrated lime.
