About Lodi, New Jersey

Lodi is a borough of 26,207 people in Bergen County, along the Saddle River. It borrowed its name from the city of Lodi in Lombardy, Italy, though locals say LOH-dye. At the time of its founding, a rush to form new boroughs, called "Boroughitis," was splitting Bergen County into small towns. Residents here voted in a referendum, and on the following day, December 22, 1894, Lodi became a borough. It was carved from parts of two older townships: Lodi Township is now called South Hackensack, and Saddle River Township is now Saddle Brook.

Mills on the Saddle River drew thousands of immigrant workers to the new borough. After the 1940s, dye and chemical plants moved in and took over from the older textile mills. That work carried real danger. An explosion killed one worker in 1969, a blast at the Mallinckrodt Chemical Company killed seven in 1973, and in 1995 an explosion at the Napp Technologies plant killed five people.

  • Felician University since 2015The Felician Sisters opened Immaculate Conception High School, a college-prep school for girls, in 1915. In 1923 they founded the Immaculate Conception Normal School, which went through several names before it became Felician University in 2015. The university added a second campus in Rutherford in 1997. The high school closed after the 2022-23 school year as enrollment fell.
  • Live through the 1965 blackoutWABC, the New York radio station, has its transmitter and towers in Lodi. When the Northeast went dark in the 1965 blackout, Dan Ingram grabbed a box of records, drove to the transmitter and broadcast his show from the backup studio there.
  • Medal of Honor, Tuskegee AirmanFrederick Behne, born in Lodi in 1873, earned the Medal of Honor for his courage aboard the USS Iowa in 1905, when a manhole plate burst from a boiler. Spann Watson, whose family came here in 1927, finished grade school in Lodi. He then flew more than 30 World War II missions with the Tuskegee Airmen, among the first Black American pilots in aerial combat.
  • Horror punk born in 1977Glenn Danzig formed the Misfits in Lodi in February 1977, and the band is often credited as a pioneer of horror punk. Danzig ran its fan club out of his mother's basement in town, and several band members lived here.
