About Saddle Brook, New Jersey
Saddle Brook is a township of 14,294 people in Bergen County, on land where the Lenape lived before Europeans came. It began on March 20, 1716, as Saddle River Township, carved from all the Bergen County land west of the Saddle River, which makes it one of the county's oldest municipalities. It formally broke away from New Barbadoes in 1724, and on February 21, 1798, it became one of 104 townships incorporated under the Township Act.
Over the next two centuries the township kept giving up land. Its far western pieces went to Pompton Township in 1797 and to West Milford Township in 1834. Starting with Glen Rock in 1894, new boroughs split off one after another, and the last of them, Fair Lawn, left in 1924. The township that remained adopted the name Saddle Brook on November 8, 1955.
- Named for a Scottish valleyThe township's first name came from the Saddle River, which feeds the Passaic. The river's own name traces back to Saddell, in Argyll, Scotland, where a stream and its valley carry it. In its early days the township stretched from Ridgewood in the north to Lodi in the south, between the Saddle River on the east and the Passaic River on the west.
- Split by royal decree in 1772Before the Revolution, a royal decree cut Saddle River Township in two. Its northern half became Franklin Township, named for William Franklin, the son of Benjamin Franklin and the last royal governor of New Jersey.
- Boroughitis in 1894New Jersey created 26 new boroughs in 1894 alone, and Saddle River Township lost two of them that year: Glen Rock on September 14 and Lodi on December 22. Wallington followed on January 2, 1895, Garfield on March 15, 1898, and East Paterson on April 18, 1916. East Paterson became Elmwood Park on January 1, 1973. Fair Lawn split off on April 5, 1924.
- Where the Parkway meets I-80The Garden State Parkway crosses Interstate 80 in Saddle Brook, at Parkway Exit 159 and Interstate Exit 62. The Parkway runs 1.0 mile through the center of the township on its way from Elmwood Park to Rochelle Park.
