About Long Lake, Minnesota
Long Lake is a small Hennepin County city whose eastern edge meets the lake that gave the community its name. Permanently settled in 1855, it later developed around a post office, railroad, mills, school, and regional berry trade. The 2020 census recorded 1,741 residents.
- Permanent SettlementPermanent settlement began in May 1855, when the Flemings and George Knettles arrived from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.
- Tamarack to Long LakeThe community's first post office opened as Tamarack in 1856, and its name changed to Long Lake in 1867.
- Railroad and SchoolRail service reached Long Lake in 1868, and a school district was organized the following year.
- Regional Berry TradeFounded locally in 1898, the Minnesota Fruit Growers Association promoted strawberries and raspberries shipped as far as Fargo and Grand Forks.
