About Loris, South Carolina

Loris is a city of 2,449 people in the northern part of Horry County, out on South Carolina's Atlantic coastal plain. It began as a railroad town on December 7, 1887, and its first job was to serve the Wilmington, Chadbourn, and Conway Railroad.

The settlement grew up around the tracks and was incorporated on July 26, 1902. Growth carried on through the 1920s and 1930s. Loris opened a high school in 1920, and by the 1930s about 1,000 people lived there. In the 1970s the town legally became a city.

“By 1903 thousands of acres of leaf were growing and tobacco markets were thriving in Conway and Loris.”
