About Los Lunas, New Mexico

Los Lunas is a village of 17,242 people and the seat of Valencia County, on the west bank of the Rio Grande. Its land was part of the San Clemente Grant, which Don Felix Candelaria received in 1716, two years after his mother had asked for it. The Luna family later owned the grant and gave the town its name, and in 1899 the United States granted the land to the family's heirs.

Los Lunas was chosen as the seat of Valencia County in 1876, and it was incorporated as a village in 1928. The state guide of 1940 counted 1,186 people living here, at 4,800 feet above sea level. The village grew fast in the 1990s and early 2000s, and enrollment at Los Lunas High School reached nearly 2,500 students around 2004.

  • Dragoons on the Camino RealThe Army kept mounted troops called dragoons at the Post at Los Lunas between 1852 and 1869. Their job was to protect settlers and travelers on the old Camino Real, and in those same years the Civil War brought fighting to the country around the village.
  • A volcano on the west sideEl Cerro de Los Lunas is a volcano formed along the Rio Grande rift. It rises at the western edge of the village and stands out as one of its best known landmarks.
  • A wartime bombing rangeDuring and after World War II, the U.S. Army Air Forces kept a bombing range at Los Lunas. Units of the 509th Bomb Wing used it, working out of Kirtland Army Air Field, which later became Kirtland Air Force Base.
