About Lower Lake, California
Isaac Edmund Mitchell founded the settlement in 1858 under the name Grantville. He built its first house, and a post office opened the same year. In 1876, residents built a jail there from stone quarried nearby. The Lower Lake Stone Jail still stands as a historic landmark.
Lower Lake once served as the Lake County seat. The 1867 county elections were bitterly fought, and the seat moved back and forth with Lakeport. The feud was settled in 1870, when Lakeport won the seat. It has stayed in Lakeport ever since.
