About Clearlake Oaks, California

Clearlake Oaks is a community of 2,551 people in Lake County, set on the northeast side of Clear Lake at 1,335 feet, about 8 miles northwest of the city of Clearlake. It grew from 2,359 people in 2010. Its first town site, back from the lake on the inland side of State Route 20, had already been divided into lots by the 1920s.

A post office opened there on June 14, 1926, and it was called Stubbs, after a local landowner. Nine years later, on June 1, 1935, the post office became Clearlake Oaks, and the community has gone by that name ever since.

  • Uncle Jack's islandCharles Stubbs, known around the lake as Uncle Jack, was an English sailor who bought a big estate along the East Lake shore. The town's first post office carried his name, and so does Stubbs Island, out in the waters of Clear Lake.
  • A triangle around a plazaThe original town sits in the mouth of a wide canyon. It was laid out as a triangle roughly 4 blocks long and 3 blocks deep, with a plaza in the middle. That plaza is paved today and serves as parking for the church on its west side, and most of the houses around it are still the small fishing cottages the village began with.
  • Nylander Park in 2007The town's park, beach and pier on the lake were fixed up in the 2000s. In 2007 the lot beside the grocery store was being cleared for a new park, named Nylander Park for the owner of that store.
