About Nice, California
Nice is a community of 2,929 people in Lake County, California. It lies 4.5 miles southeast of Upper Lake, and the town sits 1,362 feet above sea level. It began under another name, Clear Lake Villas. In the late 1920s its citizens dropped that name and chose Nice, because they thought the countryside here looked like the French Riviera around Nice, France.
- Two stories behind the nameCalifornia Place Names, published by the University of California Press, credits the town's citizens with the change from Clear Lake Villas and ties it to the landscape. Wikipedia tells it another way: Charles William Bayne renamed the place around 1930 after his former hometown, Nice, France.
- A post office in 1930The Nice post office opened in 1930, soon after the town took its new name. The mail has carried the name Nice ever since.
- Growing since 2010The census counted 2,731 people in Nice in 2010. By the 2020 census the town had grown to 2,929.
