About Luverne, Alabama

Luverne is a city of 2,765 people and the county seat of Crenshaw County, on the Patsaliga River in south-central Alabama. The Montgomery and Florida Railroad Company started acquiring right-of-way across the county in 1886, and everyone expected its line to end at Rutledge, the county seat since 1867, on the west side of the river. Early settlers including M. P. LeGrand, George A. Folmar and S. D. Hubbard persuaded the company to stop on the east bank instead.

In 1888 J. O. Sentell surveyed 33 blocks of Folmar's land east of the river, and the town grew up there. The railroad paid off quickly. In 1889 more than 5,000 tons of fertilizer arrived by rail and more than 13,000 bales of cotton left, along with timber and many passengers. Luverne was incorporated on February 6, 1891, and in 1893 the county's voters moved the courthouse from Rutledge to the growing town.

  • Named for Luverne LeGrandThe town carries the first name of Luverne LeGrand. Her husband, M. P. LeGrand, was one of its founders and helped bring the railroad to the east bank of the Patsaliga.
  • Nineteen businesses in 1891In 1891 Luverne had nearly 1,000 residents, and about 100 of them worked at nineteen businesses. Among them were a fertilizer company, a newspaper, law offices, two cotton warehouses, two planer mills and two grist mills.
  • Electric lights in 1905The town built its own electric light plant in 1905 for $10,000. Waterworks followed in 1908 at a cost of $20,000, and a fire department started in January of that year. In 1910 crews laid 2 miles of sanitary sewer.
  • The Camellia House, 1904Industrialist Frazier M. Douglass built this house in 1904. Today it is the Camellia House Bed and Breakfast, and it is listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage.
