About Madrid, New Mexico

Coal was found at Madrid in 1835, but little was mined until 1869. The Albuquerque and Cerrillos Coal Company owned and ran the whole town. Its hard and soft coal veins gave about 100,000 tons a year. By 1940 the mine served only a few users, and Madrid was nearly a ghost town.

A railroad company built Madrid in 1892 on the site of a mining camp called Keeseeville. The region lacked carpenters, so ready-made cabins were shipped in, some from Topeka, Kansas. Corporations owned the town for about 80 years. The mines closed by 1954, and Madrid later became an artists' community.

  • An early first in coalThe second coal mine in New Mexico Territory opened at Madrid in 1869. The first had opened near Carthage in Socorro County in 1863.
