About La Bajada, New Mexico

La Bajada is a small community in Santa Fe County, and the 2020 census counted 26 people living here. Its name is Spanish for "the descent," and the settlement took it from a landform in the Caja del Rio nearby. In Spanish colonial times it served the church at Pena Blanca, and travelers later stopped here for the night on their way to Santa Fe.

“In Spanish Colonial days La Bajada was a visita of Pena Blanca and later a stage station and overnight stopping place on the road to Santa Fe.”
WPA Guide to New Mexico, 1962
