About Cochiti, New Mexico
When Diego de Vargas came to retake New Mexico, the Cochiti people left their town. They went back to their long-ruined stronghold on the Potrero Viejo. It was their seventh move of the town. In the spring of 1694 Vargas and a hundred and fifty men stormed it. The short, desperate fight left twenty-one defenders dead.
Cochiti's patron is San Buenaventura, and the pueblo holds its festival on his saint's day. In 1915 a deep arroyo split the town in two. It stayed dry most of the year but ran violent after heavy mountain rains. About three-quarters of the houses stood on its north side.
- Where the Cochiti people came fromThe ancestors of the Cochiti people lived in cliff dwellings at Rito de los Frijoles, now part of Bandelier National Monument. Spanish conquistador Juan de Onate reached Cochiti Pueblo in 1598. The Cochiti people later joined the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 against Spanish rule.
