About Santo Domingo Pueblo, New Mexico

Santo Domingo Pueblo, also called Kewa Pueblo, is home to 2,311 people in Sandoval County, about halfway between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Its people speak Keres, and some of their homes date from around 1700. Francisco Vázquez de Coronado reached Kewa in 1540, when it was one of more than 70 Rio Grande villages that made goods and traded widely.

Juan de Oñate came in August 1598, on the Catholic feast of Saint Dominic, planning to bring Kewa and its neighbors under Spanish rule, and the pueblo was given the saint's name. A mission and a church soon followed. In 1680 Kewa joined nearby pueblos in a revolt that killed four priests and Spanish settlers, and it rose again in 1696, but the Spanish put down both uprisings. In 2009 the pueblo officially went back to Kewa, the Keres name its council says it always had, and changed its seal, signs and letterhead to match.

  • A fugitive caught in 1591Gaspar Castaño de Sosa, a slaver running from the Crown, led an illegal expedition up the Pecos River and raided Pecos Pueblo for slaves. On the Viceroy's orders, Captain Juan Morlette tracked him to Kewa in March 1591, arrested him and sent him back for trial. Castaño left behind two interpreters he had kidnapped, Tomas and Cristobal, and Oñate's expedition found them at Kewa as it traveled north.
  • Thunderbird jewelryKewa's Keres-speaking jewelers were known for their skill, but during the Great Depression turquoise, jet and shell became too costly or too hard to find. To keep feeding their families, artisans set leftover turquoise chips beside bright celluloid cut from combs and other household goods, mounted on black rubber salvaged from old car battery cases. The pieces came to be called thunderbird jewelry.
  • Feast day on August 4Every year on August 4 the pueblo honors its patron, Saint Dominic. More than 2,000 Pueblo people take part in the traditional corn dances held that day.
  • Pottery for the tourist tradeKewa potters, many of them women, are known for large ollas and dough bowls. The Aguilar family, two sisters and a sister-in-law, made celebrated pots here from 1910 until about 1915. In the 1920s a railway stop at nearby Wallace brought tourists, and pottery became a valuable export for the pueblo.
