About Malden, West Virginia

Malden is an unincorporated community of 444 people in Kanawha County, in the Charleston metro area. It is the home of the Salines salt wells, and its first name was Kanawha Salines, the name its post office carried from 1814.

In the 1830s the Ruffner family, who ran a saltworks at what is now Port Amherst, divided the land just east of it into lots and sold them. The village laid out on those lots followed a New England plan and was named Salt borough. The community switched to the name Malden in 1879, most likely after Malden, Massachusetts, and the Malden post office stayed open until 1961.

“Malden was the commercial center of Western Virginia's richest and most industrialized region in the early 19th century.”
