About Manchaca, Texas

Manchaca Springs was a stopping place on the Old San Antonio Road and later on the Chisholm Trail. The town grew after 1880, when the International-Great Northern Railroad arrived. By 1884 the community shipped out cotton, grain, lumber and posts.

A 1932 county map showed three grade schools in Manchaca. White, African American and Mexican American children each had their own school. Those schools were the center of local life. In 1961 Manchaca and Oak Hill merged into one high school district, which the Austin system absorbed in 1967.
