About Manheim, New York

Manheim is a town of 3,082 people in Herkimer County, with the Mohawk River along its southern edge and East Canada Creek on its eastern line. The land was part of the town of Palatine, in Montgomery County, until Manheim was formed as a town of its own in 1797. By 1865 the new town had 1,831 people, and today the village of Dolgeville sits in its northeastern corner.

  • Named for MannheimSettlers from the German states arrived around 1756. The town's name comes from Mannheim, a city in Baden, Germany.
  • Raided in 1780During the American Revolution, Loyalists and their native allies struck the settlements in what is now Manheim in 1780.
  • Ingham Mills since 1802The hamlet of Ingham Mills began in 1802, when a grist mill and a saw mill were built at the town's eastern line. Part of the hamlet lies across that line in Oppenheim, in Fulton County.
