About St. Johnsville, New York

St. Johnsville is a town of 2,598 people in Montgomery County, with the Mohawk River and the Erie Canal along its southern edge. Settlers first came around 1725, when this land was part of the Palatine District. Sir William Johnson built a church here in 1769 for his Indian allies.

For about a century the area was governed as part of Oppenheim. In 1838 St. Johnsville was split off as a town of its own, and Oppenheim became part of the newly created Fulton County. The village on the north shore of the Mohawk set itself apart from the town in 1857, when it incorporated as a village.

  • Named for St. JohnAccounts of the name differ. Most say the town and village honor Alexander St. John, an early surveyor and commissioner. Others trace the name to an older one used for the area, St. John's Church.
  • Fort Klock, built in 1750Johannes Klock built a fortified stone house in 1750 east of the village, on the south side of what is now NY-5. During the Revolution, in 1780, a brief skirmish was fought near it. The grounds now also hold other historic buildings that were rebuilt or moved there.
  • 120 acres for Klock ParkJoseph H. Reaney and his wife had given St. Johnsville 120 acres northwest of the village by 1934. The land became Klock Park, named for Dr. Charles M. Klock, a local physician the town held in high regard. Today the H.C Smith Benefit Club uses the park's building for many community events.
  • Smallest town in the countyCovering 17.4 square miles, St. Johnsville is the smallest town by area in Montgomery County. East Canada Creek forms its western line, and Crum, Timmerman, Zimmerman and Mother creeks run south through it to the Mohawk.
