About Fort Plain, New York, Drawn Like an Old Atlas

The village took its name from a fort built in 1776 during the American Revolution. A blockhouse there held soldiers for the whole war. With many local men away fighting, women dressed as men guarded the fort. They fought off the attacks.

Bud Fowler, the first Black professional baseball player, was born in Fort Plain. In 1878 he played in an exhibition game for a Lynn, Massachusetts, club. That came 68 years before Jackie Robinson reached the major leagues.

  • The 2013 flood and recoveryOn June 28, 2013, Otsquago Creek flooded after 4 inches of rain fell. More than 100 houses in Fort Plain were damaged or destroyed, and bridges washed out. The state quickly began repairs and laid tons of rock to steady the creek banks.
