About Palatine, New York

Palatine is a town of 3,189 people in Montgomery County, on the north bank of the Mohawk River. It takes its name from the Palatinate, a Rhineland region of Germany. French raids had driven many Germans from that homeland, and in 1710 Queen Anne of England arranged passage for several thousand of the refugees to her colony. They first labored in English-run camps beside the Hudson River to repay the cost of the voyage, and by the middle of the 18th century Palatines were the main settlers here.

After the Revolutionary War, in 1788, the old Palatine District of the newly organized Montgomery County became the town of Palatine. It soon began to shrink, because new towns were cut from its land. Part of it became Salisbury in 1797, a town that now lies in Herkimer County, and St. Johnsville was later formed from Palatine as well.

  • A Palatine church from 1770The German settlers built the Palatine Church in 1770, before the Revolution reached the valley. Lutheran congregations still worship there, and the church joined the National Register in 1973.
  • Stone Arabia in 1780The hamlet of Stone Arabia sits along Route 10, northeast of Palatine Bridge. Fort Paris stood there, and in 1780 the hamlet saw a small Revolutionary War fight, the Battle of Stone Arabia. The Trinity Lutheran Church and Cemetery and the Reformed Dutch Church of Stone Arabia stand there, and the hamlet is now home to a large Amish community.
  • Big Nose on the MohawkAt the town line in the southeast stands a landmark called Big Nose. It faces Little Nose on the far bank of the Mohawk River, and together the two are known as The Noses.
