About Nelliston, New York

Abraham Nellis started the village of Nelliston in 1860. It was named for him in 1880. He also helped secure a free bridge over the Mohawk between Nelliston and Fort Plain. It led the way for every other free bridge on that river.

The village takes its name from the Nellis family. Andrew Nellis, who began the family line here, arrived in 1722 in the area that became the town of Palatine. Two forts, Fox and Wagner, stood on this site in the late colonial period.
