About Maple Heights, Ohio

Maple Heights is a city of 23,701 people in Cuyahoga County, a suburb of Cleveland. Its first residents lived in an area called Maple Grove. In 1914 it looked as if the village of Bedford would soon annex them, so they voted to start a community of their own instead. They named it Maple Heights for its many maple trees, and it had 1,000 residents when it was incorporated.

  • City buses since 1935In 1935 the city started its own bus line, Maple Heights Transit. Its buses carried riders to Downtown Cleveland, ran across town and served the schools.
  • Southgate USA in 1955Southgate USA was dedicated in 1955 as one of the first large shopping centers, and it opened with more than 80 stores. Sears, May Company and JCPenney were among them. The GCRTA opened the Southgate Transit Center there in 2002 as a hub for bus lines that reach East Cleveland, Shaker Heights, Bedford and Downtown Cleveland, and that run out to the Summit County line.
  • Back from fiscal emergencyBy early 2015 the city's funds were more than $2.8 million in deficit and it had missed 3 loan payments, so in February 2015 State Auditor Dave Yost declared a fiscal emergency. City leaders cut back and rebuilt the budget, and in 2019 the general fund ended positive for the first time since the declaration. Auditor Keith Faber released the city from fiscal emergency on November 18, 2020.
  • A first for the mayor's officeSixteen people have served as mayor of Maple Heights, two of them in terms that weren't back to back. Annette M. Blackwell, elected in 2015, became the first woman and the first African American to lead the city.
