About Marble Rock, Iowa

In 1852, Jacob Beelar claimed the land where Marble Rock now stands. Other pioneers followed and settled there. The nearest grist mill was forty miles away at Cedar Falls, a three-day trip over rough roads. The nearest post office was thirty miles away at Waverly.

Jacob Beelar owned the Marble Rock village plat, laid out in October 1856. The village stood at the south end of Beelar's Grove, on the east bank of the Shell Rock. It rested on beds of rock excellent for building. Many quarries jutted from the river bank.

  • Local butter that reached New YorkMoody and Dilts opened the Marble Rock Creamery in May 1882. It stood on the east side of the river by the bridge. Its butter was shipped to New York. A spring in the riverbank fed water to its turbine wheel for power.
