About Marengo, Iowa

From the Century History Company: "Commissioners selected a site for the county-seat on the banks of the Iowa River and caused a town to be platted which was named Marengo. William Downward built the first house in the new town and, in company with H. H. Hull, opened the first store."

From the History of Iowa County: "The first store in Marengo was kept by William Downard in 1847. It was two blocks west of the square in a log building which served at once for a store and dwelling."
