About Martin, Tennessee

Martin is a city of 10,825 people in Weakley County, and it is home to the University of Tennessee at Martin. Captain William Martin, born in Halifax County, Virginia, in 1806, settled here with his wife Sarah in 1832 and did well growing tobacco. In 1852 he began pushing to bring a railroad connection to the area, but he died in 1859 before it came. His sons, led mostly by George W. Martin, finished the job in 1872, when they convinced the Mississippi Central Railroad to put its junction with the Nashville and Northwestern Railroad here.

The place had first been called Green Briar Glade and then Frost, after an Illinois Central Railroad official. On February 11, 1874, George W., M. P. and W. H. Martin made a sale to the Mississippi Central for $5, and the railroad renamed the spot Martin, both to honor William Martin and to help advertise it. On September 22, 1874, surveyor H. C. Draughon platted the town. Two days later Draughon, G.W. Martin and A.M. Clemons filed for incorporation, and on November 27 most of the 36 residents voted for it.

  • The first mayorsAfter the vote to incorporate, John L. Smith was appointed mayor. On February 5, 1875, the town held its election and chose B.F. Crawford as mayor, along with six aldermen and a constable.
  • Yellow fever in 1878When yellow fever struck in 1878, Martin had 500 people. The outbreak infected 400 of them, and 52 died.
  • Sidewalks, streets and sewersLater mayors built up the town. Concrete sidewalks and gravel streets went in while Wiley Blakemore was mayor, and the town got its sewers during J.T. Perkins's term as mayor.
  • From academy to universityAlong with its public schools, Martin had two denominational academies, McFerrin and Hall-Moody. By 1967 Hall-Moody had become the University of Tennessee at Martin, and today one of the city's two ZIP codes, 38238, is set aside for the campus.
  • Among the happiest, 1970Esquire magazine picked Martin in 1970 as one of the nation's happiest towns.
