About Mason, New Hampshire

Mason was first known as Number One, part of a line of border towns. In 1768 Governor Wentworth named it for Captain John Mason, the founder of New Hampshire. Mason and Sir Ferdinando Gorges received this land in 1622 from the Council of New England.

Samuel Wilson, the meat supplier believed to have inspired the Uncle Sam character, grew up near the center of Mason. A state historical marker identifies his boyhood home, which is a private house.

  • A storybook cottagePickity Place, a cottage Ebenezer Blood built in 1759, was the model for the grandmother's house in Little Red Riding Hood. Elizabeth Orton Jones drew it for her 1948 illustrated version of the story.
