About Mattawa, Washington

Mattawa is a city of 3,335 people in Grant County, Washington. E. and Eva Campbell platted the town in 1909, but they never incorporated it, and for decades Mattawa had no town government of its own. That changed when crews began building Priest Rapids Dam and Wanapum Dam nearby, and construction workers poured into the little town. With the boom underway, Mattawa was incorporated on June 3, 1958.

  • First straw bale libraryMattawa is home to the first library in the United States built with straw bales.
  • Port of Mattawa, 1958The Port of Mattawa was founded in 1958, the same year the town incorporated while the dam workers were arriving.
  • A city since 2009By the early 2000s Mattawa had passed 4,000 residents. In December 2009 it incorporated a second time, now as the City of Mattawa, a non-charter code city.
