About Mauriceville, Texas
Mauriceville is a community of 2,983 people in Orange County, Texas. It grew up where two railroads met. The Texarkana and Fort Smith line came through in 1898, and the Orange and Northwestern followed in 1902. The new town took the name of Maurice Miller, whose father served as the Orange and Northwestern's first president.
- A store at the junctionJ. P. Hilliard put up a general store and feed store where the two railroads crossed, and it became the first place in town for trade and gathering. When Mauriceville got its post office on November 2, 1906, Hilliard was named its first postmaster.
- Timber, then rice and dairyLumber was the area's main business in the early years. In 1917 the R. W. Wier Lumber Company laid a tram road running north and west of town, which gave local people a real lift. As the timber ran low, rice and dairy farming took over the economy.
- Crawfish Capital of TexasThe New York Times wrote about Mauriceville's young crawfish farming business, and a year later, in 1983, the Texas Legislature named the town the Crawfish Capital of Texas. Mauriceville holds a Crawfish Festival every April.
