About Max Meadows, Virginia
The rich lowlands at Max Meadows were once called the Valley of Contention and Strife. The nickname came from petty feuds among the settlers. Hugh McGavock built the Mansion House here, a two-story log home with stone chimneys. It was a mansion only next to the cabins around it.
In 1891, a writer noted that Max Meadows had been a plain railroad station only a year or two before. Wagons hauled iron there from Cripple Creek furnaces ten miles off. Then investors bought nearby ore banks and the land around the station. The place grew into a village, with a handsome new inn.
- Where the town's name came fromThe name Max Meadows first described wide, very fertile meadows. The railroad depot built in those meadows took the same name. By 1881 it was one of the great shipping depots for pig iron, lead and zinc.
