About May, Texas

May is an unincorporated community of 277 people in northeastern Brown County, about 20 miles north of Brownwood. The land here was once part of a Mexican land grant given to the empresario John Cameron in 1827, and the community grew up during the 1870s. It takes its name from W. D. May, one of the pioneer settlers who came to the area.

His brother, Nathan L. May, opened a store at the site in 1879. Two years later, in 1881, a post office opened, and May served as postmaster. By 1907 the town had a blacksmith shop, a general store, a newspaper and a bank, and that same year the Brownwood North and South Railway made May one of its stops. The railroad abandoned the line in 1927, but the town kept growing, and by 1940 it had 500 residents, fourteen businesses and several churches and schools.

  • Holding steady since 1980After 1940, May slowly lost people, and its sandy land kept growth slow. The community still had about 285 residents in 1980, and that number held steady through 2000. It keeps its own post office even though it was never incorporated.
  • A Texas landmark in 1981The state named May a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1981. In 2016 the May Cemetery, the community's burial ground, was designated a Historic Texas Cemetery.
  • A century of MethodistsMay has long had both Baptist and Methodist congregations. In 2001 a state historical marker went up for May United Methodist Church, honoring more than 100 years of the church's life in the community.
  • From Old Swayback to May HighBefore the May Independent School District took over public schooling, local children went to a school called Old Swayback school. The bull rider J.W. Harris moved to May when he was 15 and graduated from May High School.
