About Maybee, Michigan

Maybee is a village of 545 people in Monroe County, in the southwest corner of Exeter Township. A town began to form here around 1873, when the Canada Southern Railway laid track through the area. It took its name from Abram Maybee, an early settler, and by 1875 he and Joseph Klotz had surveyed and platted the land and were selling lots.

The rail line soon passed to the Detroit, Toledo and Ironton Railroad, which hauled charcoal and other forest products from Maybee north to Detroit and south into Ohio. Around the station grew a grain elevator, a gristmill, a quarry and sand pit, a hotel, churches, schools, small factories and stores. As more people settled, Maybee incorporated as a village in 1899.

“The villages of Scofield and Maybee also came into existence, each the center of a lively trade with the surrounding region.”
History of Monroe County, Michigan, 1890
  • Village Hall from 1912Maybee built its village hall in 1912, and the building held both the village offices and the fire station until 1977. Michigan named it a State Historic Site on March 15, 1988. Since March 2021 it has served Monroe County as a sheriff substation, and the village offices now sit next door on Raisin Street.
  • A post office since 1874Maybee got its first post office on February 24, 1874, the year after the railroad came through. A second office opened on August 1, 1903, and it still runs today on Mill Street, while the first one closed on February 3, 1972.
  • Graves back to 1871Two cemeteries along Raisin Street are still in use. Saint Joseph Cemetery holds graves from as early as 1871, and the North Side Cemetery has burials going back to 1876.
  • 546 acres in 2013The village kept the same boundaries it drew in 1899 for more than a century. That changed in 2013, when Maybee took in 546 acres of Stoneco Quarry land just north of town.
