About Ash, Michigan
Ash is a township of 7,860 people in Monroe County. In 1837 the Michigan legislature split it off from Frenchtown, taking in the ground that now forms both Ash and Berlin townships, and that spring voters held the first township election at the house of John M. Beaubien. Irish and German immigrants began arriving in the 1840s, when people called the area Stony Creek.
The land stayed thick with timber and thinly settled until the railroads came through. In April 1872 Daniel A. Matthews and Charles A. Kent platted the village of Carleton on eighty acres, and Matthews and William A. Hickok soon added eighty more. The first building in the new village was the Matthews House, a good-sized two-story frame hotel beside the railroad crossing.
- Where two railroads crossedCarleton grew up where the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern line met the Flint and Pere Marquette. The two railroads shared a frame depot in the village, and it held Western Union telegraph and express company offices.
- Charcoal kilns cleared the landMatthews built a sawmill that started the local lumber trade, and in 1874 Edwards & Blinn opened a stave mill and heading works, which ran until it burned in the summer of 1887. In 1876 and 1877 Matthews and John L. Hood built brick kilns to turn timber into charcoal. That work helped clear the woods around the village, which became farmland and brought steady business to the stores in Carleton.
- A flour mill in 1885Edward Kahlbaum bought the grain elevator Matthews had owned and added a roller-process flour mill. Edwards & Adams had opened a brick and tile yard next to the village in 1884, and in 1886 they put up a brick building on Monroe Avenue that held three stores.
- Opera house and race courseCarleton held its public gatherings in the Carleton Opera House and Edwards Hall. The village had a uniformed brass band, a Grand Army post and a lodge of the Ancient Order of United Workmen, and fans of fast horses could visit the Matthews race course.
