About Stoneham, Massachusetts

Stoneham is a town of 23,244 people in Middlesex County, about nine miles north of Boston. Colonists first settled here in 1634, when this hilly ground was the far northern end of Charlestown. On December 17, 1725, the General Court made Stoneham a town of its own, and the next year residents raised their first meetinghouse, building it with lime made by burning marble dug from a pit close to Bear Hill.

Around 1804 Stoneham started making children's shoes, and the trade soon took over. Farmers stitched shoes through the winter, and nearly every house had a small shop beside it. In the year ending April 1, 1837, the town's 932 residents turned out 380,100 pairs worth $184,717. John Hill and Company, which ran its work first by horse power and then by steam, built a large factory in 1858 that still stands at 426 Main Street. By 1885 the town had 34 shoe factories employing about 1,300 people.

“We were a typical New England manufacturing town, just emerging from the country life of our grandfathers, commencing in a small way, and laying the foundations for a larger future.”
History of Stoneham, 1891
  • A lunch of only cheeseGovernor Winthrop and his men passed through on February 7, 1632. Circling a frozen pond dotted with rocks and small islands, they named it Spot Pond. They stopped on a tall rock to eat and learned the governor's servant had forgotten the bread, so they ate only cheese, and the rock became Cheese Rock. It stands at the north end of Bear Hill, named for the bears that once lived there, Silas Dean wrote in his 1843 town history.
  • The town house on runnersIn 1826 Stoneham built a town house, but families kept settling near the turnpike, now Main Street. On March 4, 1833, voters chose to relocate it; opponents called a second meeting for the 12th to reverse that, so movers had a week. Forty or fifty yoke of oxen dragged the house on runners over frozen snow, and Thomas Gould's apple trees were felled to keep the route straight. The house reached its new lot, leaving the later meeting powerless.
  • A church burned on SundayThe congregation formed in 1729. On January 5, 1840, its meetinghouse caught fire and burned during Sunday service. Members built a Greek Revival replacement and dedicated it on October 22 of the same year. That building, the First Congregational Church, still stands on Main Street and joined the National Register in 1984.
  • Off to war in 1861On April 17, 1861, Captain John H. Dike sent word to the governor that he would reach the State House by eleven that morning with his whole company. Two days later, on April 19, he was shot in Baltimore as his Stoneham Light Infantry pushed through a mob there. Over the course of the war the town sent 404 men, 46 more than all the calls required.
  • A Carnegie library in 1904Stoneham's library was founded in 1859. In 1904 Andrew Carnegie gave $15,000 for a Classical Revival building at Main and Maple streets, and that building remains the core of the Stoneham Public Library today.
