About Medford, Massachusetts

Medford is a city of 59,659 people in Middlesex County, on the Mystic River. The Naumkeag people spent their winters here, growing corn and setting fish weirs in the river. In 1639 the colony purchased what is now West Medford from their leader, the Squaw Sachem of Mistick. English colonists had arrived in 1630 and settled the place as part of Charlestown. Thomas Dudley named it Mistick for the river, and his party later changed the name to Meadford.

In 1637 a toll bridge went up over the Mystic at the spot where Main Street now crosses into Medford Square on the Cradock Bridge. It stayed the only bridge over the river until 1787, so travelers from the north bound for Boston came through town. Medford had 230 people in 1700 and 1,114 in 1800. After 1880 farms were cut into house lots, the count reached 18,244 by 1900, and Medford became a city in 1892.

“Eight generations of men and women have been born in Medford, have lived and labored and passed away, and yet the place is Medford still, no mean city, for twenty thousand people call it by the dearest name of home.”
Sermon at Trinity Church, 1905
  • Medford rum and crackersAndrew Hall is thought to have started Medford's first distillery in 1735, beside a spring known for its fine water. The 1855 town history says Medford rum became so famous that other New England distillers put Medford's name on their barrels. After taking over Ebenezer Hall's bakery in 1797, Convers Francis created the Medford cracker, so called because each split into two even halves. In 1834 the town's historian spotted a sign for them in a London shop window.
  • 513 ships by 1855Thatcher Magoun laid his first keel on the Mystic in 1802, and other yards soon lined the river. In 1845 they launched thirty vessels in one year, and the Shooting Star, Medford's first clipper ship, followed in 1850. By 1855 the town's yards had built 513 vessels. The shipyards are gone, but the Federal and Greek Revival houses of the Old Ship Street Historic District went up during those years.
  • Paul Revere at Isaac Hall'sPaul Revere rode into Medford late on the night of April 18, 1775, woke Isaac Hall, captain of the minute-men, and then crossed the bridge. Hall's house on High Street, built by his father Andrew about 1720, is now the oldest one left in Medford Square. Within a week New Hampshire men had gathered in Medford and asked John Stark to lead them. The Isaac Hall House joined the National Register in 1975.
  • The moths of Myrtle StreetLeopold Trouvelot, a French naturalist, hoped to breed a better silkworm at his Glenwood home, and in 1868 some of his gypsy moths got loose. Each year the caterpillars grew worse, until in 1889 they stripped every leaf from neighbors' apple and pear trees. The state sprayed Glenwood and Wellington, burned caterpillars with kerosene torches and posted special police on roads out of town to keep wagons from carrying them away. The moth spread across North America anyway.
  • Over the RiverA trip across Medford to her grandparents' house gave Lydia Maria Child the poem later sung as "Over the River and Through the Wood." About 1839 the shipbuilder Paul Curtis had enlarged that farmhouse and given it an Ionic portico. Tufts restored the Paul Curtis House in 1976, and it still stands on South Street near the river.
