About Maybrook, New York

Maybrook is a village of 3,150 people in Orange County, with most of it in the town of Montgomery and a small part in Hamptonburgh. It started as Orange Junction, the end of a Central New England Railroad line, where the company put up a two-story office building at the end of Main Street and built houses nearby for its employees.

Having its office there led the railroad to plan a huge yard in 1908. It grew into the largest switching terminal east of the Mississippi, stretching three miles from Main Street to Route 17K and one mile across, and it sent eastbound traffic from several railroads over the Poughkeepsie Bridge. The settlement grew along with the yard, and in 1926 it was incorporated as a village, the last of Montgomery's three.

  • A switching record in 1943The yard reached its peak during World War II, when it employed 1,500 people. In May 1943 its crews set a switching record, breaking up and rebuilding twenty-five eastbound trains with 1665 cars and twenty-nine westbound trains with 1826 cars, all within two hours.
  • The bridge fire of 1974In 1974 flames burned through three hundred feet of the railroad bridge at Poughkeepsie. The yard had lost its only route for outbound trains, so the terminal was all but finished, and its yards, terminals and roundhouses were later torn out. Freight trains still reach Maybrook on the Middletown and New Jersey Railroad.
  • Trucks on the old rail yardAfter the trains left, Yellow Freight ran a trucking center on a large part of the former rail yard. It operated there until it shut down in 2023, and R&L Carriers is set to take its place.
