About Hamptonburgh, New York

Hamptonburgh is a town of 5,489 people in north central Orange County, and its town offices sit in the hamlet of Campbell Hall. The land was part of a patent granted in 1703 to Christopher Denn and others. An early settler, the stonemason William Bull, named the place for his birthplace, Wolverhampton, England.

Bull and Sarah Wells married in 1718 and built a stone house on 100 acres. Over his life Bull gathered thousands of acres around that first farm, and much of it passed to his five sons and then to their children. Hamptonburgh became a town of its own in 1830, formed from parts of Blooming Grove, Goshen and Montgomery. Its land included property that had belonged to Fletcher Mathews, a Loyalist whose brother David was Mayor of New York City during the British occupation.

  • The Bull Stone HouseThe house William Bull and Sarah Wells built after their wedding stands where the Sarah Wells Trail meets County Route 51. Bull family members still own it and live in it, and they hold the second longest running annual family reunion in America.
  • Sarah Wells lived to 100William Bull also built the stone house later used as General Henry Knox's headquarters in the Revolution, and he died in the winter of 1755/56. Sarah Wells lived to 100 years and 15 days, dying in 1796, and both lie in the Hamptonburgh Cemetery.
  • Named for Colonel CampbellCampbell Hall takes its name from Colonel Campbell, a Scotsman with two sons. When the Revolution began, one son sided with England and the other with America, and the Tory brother refused to speak to his Republican brother. Samuel Watkins Eager's Outline History of Orange County says the way the war turned out later changed the Tory's mind.
  • A railroad hub until 1957From 1900 to about 1960, Campbell Hall was busy with trains. The Erie, the Lehigh and New England, the New York, Ontario & Western and others traded freight at the big Maybrook yard nearby. The struggling NYO&W shut down in 1957, freight on the other lines fell off, and Hamptonburgh lost many railroad jobs. A small yard at Campbell Hall Junction still marks the end of the Maybrook line.
  • America's first butter factoryCampbell Hall is known as the home of America's first butter factory. The hamlet still has horse and dairy farms, along with the Bull's Head Inn, the Otterkill Fire Department and a Metro-North station.
