About Blooming Grove, New York

Blooming Grove is a town of 18,811 people in central Orange County, southwest of Newburgh. Its earliest settler was most likely Vincent Mathews, who bought the Rip Van Dam patent in 1721, put up a grist mill and called his settlement Mathewsfield. His son, David Mathews, sided with the Loyalists and served as Mayor of New York.

The state carved the town out of Cornwall in 1799, and over the next decades it gave up land of its own. Part of Blooming Grove became the town of Hamptonburgh in 1830, and another piece was split off to create Chester in 1845. Much later, in July 2006, South Blooming Grove incorporated as a village inside the town.

  • Winemaking since 1839The Brotherhood Winery opened in 1839 in Washingtonville, a village within the town. No winery in the United States has run longer without a break.
  • The Poughkeepsie SeerAndrew Jackson Davis came into the world here in 1826. He grew up to become famous as the "Poughkeepsie Seer."
  • The county's highest peakSchunnemunk Mountain, the tallest mountain in Orange County, rises along the town's eastern line. Its slopes once held Mountain Lodge Park, a summer community.
