About the Village of Monroe, New York
Monroe began with David Smith of Brookhaven on Long Island, who built a house here in 1741. He dammed the creek for a mill, and the place became known as Smith's Mills. In 1808 it was renamed Munroe for a state senator. A later spelling mix-up led to stories that it honored President James Monroe.
In 1892 a fire destroyed much of Monroe's downtown. The people of Monroe answered by formally incorporating the village two years later. They did it so they could set up a fire department and a water supply system.
